Capital Punishment Essay: Death Penalty Can be Fair, and Fun!
The Death Penalty Can be Fair à Each American should need reasonableness in every aspect of open strategy - this is particularly evident concerning capital punishment, since a lot is on the line. In any case, the adversaries of capital punishment make a most exceptional contention about reasonableness. They contend that if capital punishment isn't directed decently, and particularly managed with racial reasonableness, it must be canceled. à No one would even consider attempting to apply this standard in a predictable manner. On the off chance that we locate that dark neighborhoods get less police insurance than white neighborhoods, would we pull back cops from both highly contrasting neighborhoods? In the event that banks are oppressing dark home purchasers in contract loaning, would we request they stop all home loan loaning? In the event that we discover the IRS victimizing working class and poor citizens, would we need to annul the IRS? Okay, that has a fascination, yet no one is truly proposing it. à What do the rivals of capital punishment state ought to supplant it? Life detainment, maybe? Be that as it may, there is no motivation to accept this punishment is more genuinely forced than capital punishment. So would we say we are going to wreck the most extreme to 10 years? Provided that this is true, we face a similar issue. à Notwithstanding the philosophical confusion of the contention, the observational truth of racial uniqueness in the death penalty is much more entangled than shortsighted ideas about prejudice go crazy in the criminal equity framework would persuade. It's significant here to comprehend that the adversaries of capital punishment make two unique contentions about racial decency, and they are straight opposing. à The primary thing that we see when we begin seeing measurements is... ...pital litigants are an exceptionally self-chose and barely unprejudiced gathering. à So what we have, in the method of hard measurable proof, neglects to help the politically right dream of enormous separation. Is capital punishment controlled with impeccable reasonableness? No. Is it directed as decently as other open strategies, and particularly as reasonably as other criminal authorizations? Indeed. à Open authorities should work to make the framework much more pleasant. Specifically, better arrangement could be made for a successful resistance in capital cases. What's more, I imagine that a restoration of official mercy (which has fallen into neglect) in situations where a jury is seen to have been too unforgiving would be something worth being thankful for. In any case, the thought that injustice, and especially racial shamefulness, requires the finish of capital punishment bodes well. à Ã

Justice in Glaspell Essay - 275 Words
Justice in Glaspell (Essay Sample) Content: StudentProfessorComposition04/05/2014Justice in Glaspell's TriflesTrifles, a play written by Susan Glaspell in 1916, delve into issues of gender role and justice in society. According to Holstein, trifles are "small details of trivial importance and having no great or lasting merit" (290). In her play, Glaspell depicts those trivial details as crucial in the investigation, hence the title. The setting of the play is John and Minnie Wright's farmhouse. The play begins with discovery of Wright's death, a result of strangling. The fact that he slept with his wife on that fateful night makes Minnie the first suspect. The other characters include Henderson the county attorney, Peters the sheriff and his wife, as well as Hale and his wife. The questioning of Mr. Hale by the sheriff sets the stage of the play. Hale was walking past Wright's house when he thought he could get in and sell him a telephone line. Mrs. Wright informs him that her husband is dead. Hale invites his friend Harry to go with him and see Wright's corpse upstairs. Together, they call the sheriff who is later joined by Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters. The team begins looking for evidence to help in uncovering the killer. The women, obviously more perceptive than men, come across subtle, yet crucial evidence that could unravel the murderer. Ultimately, men investigators find no evidence to incriminate anyone while it was clear to the women who the murderer was. Many scholars have interpreted the refusal by the women to disclose their evidence as protest against men's injustice while others have viewed it as obstruction of justice. Justice entails fairness and freedom from discrimination. Gender justice refers to a state whereby the society offers all genders fair and equal chance without prejudice and stereotyping. The women in the play were pursuing gender justice. They were morally right to suppress their evidence as doing otherwise would show lack of empathy and perpetuate men's arrogan ce and injustice. To understand gender justice in the play, it is important to look at the position of both genders in the society. A cursory glance at the play shows that men were not only arrogant towards women but also abused and suppressed their identity, right to be heard and live without marginalization. To begin with, women lack identity. To accentuate this, Glaspell does not refer to her women characters with their name. Instead, she identifies them in respect to their husband. There is Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Hale, and Mrs. Peters. While it is essentially cultural to refer to women as "Mrs.à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã , the feminist perspective is that the practice amounts to loss of identity. In other words, women exist because of their husbands. The stripping of identity, though not offensive, psychologically prepares women to suppression by their husband and other men.To gain further understanding of women in the play, and hence their intuitive decision to suppress evidence, it is important to understand the protagonist's, Mrs. Wright, predicaments. To begin with, she had no children. Her life was difficult and unbearable. She had learned to bury her sorrows in the singing of her bird. Bizarrely, Mr. Right killed the bird, the only source of joy for her. Glaspell use of bird at a symbolic level is not lost to the reader. To Mrs. Wright, the bird symbolized joy and escape from sorrows and cruelty of the world. The sense of detachment from her husband and lack of children left her with little source of emotional and psychological support. By wringing the neck of the bird, Mr. Wright was killing his wife's only source of joy, happiness, and hope. There is strong possibility that Mrs. Wright wrung the rope around her husband's neck out of anger and frustration emanating from his cruelty. The bottom line is that just like many women during her time; she is suppressed, abused, and marginalized without recourse. The title of the play, trifles, captures the manner in which men in the society held women. According to Holstein, Women, and their opinions, were "mere simpletons, there to be seen but not to be heard" (295). No one embodies this attitude more than the sheriff, the man on whose shoulders laid the responsibility to unearth the murderer. While the women see the messy house as a sign of a troubled mind, men see it as a sign of laziness and neglect of domestic chores. The sheriff thinks that since he is the man who enforces the law, his wife too is married to the law. Women play rudimental role in the society, at least as far as men are concerned. This collective suppression bred a strong sense of comradeship between the women to the extent of withholding evidence to save their own.Trivialization by men is just one of the many reasons that women could cite to protect one of their own. The society was unable and unwilling to understand and appreciate the differences in men and women and harness them for collective well-being. Men's attitude towards w omen had inculcated a sense of timidity on women. Notice the body language and behavior of women in the opening part of the play. Their slow movement and position near the door illustrate "high levels of inferiority complex that men's dominance had embedded in their minds" (Tatar 274). The more men became critical of Mrs. Wright, the more women came together physically, and inevitably psychologically. This is very crucial as it informed their intuitive agreement to suppress the evidence and shield one of their own.The abuse, suppression, and marginalization of women meant that Mrs. Wright did not stand any chance of justice in a male dominated system. Holstein argues that the "precept of natural justice is that one is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent jurisdiction of law" (291). In this case, however, the sheriff and his male coterie have presumed Mrs. Wright guilty even without enough incriminating evidence. Even if they was only her and her husband at the time o f death, something investigators had not ascertained, there was still a possibility that other causes could have caused Mr. Wright's death. Moreover, by constantly being critical of Mrs. Wright perceived negligence of domestic chores, the men were being unfair to a woman who, supposedly, might have been mourning. This is only an indication that they had presumed her guilty before trial. To understand why the women suppressed the evidence, it is also crucial to understand how women relate with one another. In Glaspell's Trifles, this is evident from the opening of the play. The women get into the house and stick close to each other physically. Because of their socialization, "they are very percept...

Collective Nouns and Verb Agreement in Spanish
Collective nouns ââ¬â singular nouns that refer to more than one being or thing ââ¬â arent consistently treated as either singular or plural in Spanish. Grammar Rules for Using Collective Nouns There is one grammar rule, however, that is clear: When the collective nounà is followed immediately by a verb, the noun is treated as singular. La gente cree que las cosas està ¡n mal. (People believe things are bad).La muchedumbre fue manipulada. (The crowd was manipulated.)Sobre el papel, el equipo era muy competitivo. (On paper, the team was very competitive.) However, when there are words that intervene ââ¬â especially de followed by a plural noun ââ¬â Spanish speakers are inconsistent in the verbs they use. Authorities also disagree on which choice of verb is proper. Note the following examples, all foundà through a search of mainstream Spanish-language web pages: Somos un grupo de personas que conforma la lista de correo electrà ³nico. (We are a group of people who belong to an email list.)Somos un grupo de personas que deseamos compartir con ustedes. (We are a group of people who wish to share with you.)Un rebaà ±o de nubes negras pasea por el cielo. (A group of dark clouds marches across the sky.)El rebaà ±o de hembras deben integrarse en el de los machos. (The herd of females ought to blend with one of males.)Cerca de la mitad de las personas en edad de jubilacià ³n en el mundo no reciben ningà ºn tipo de pensià ³n. (About half of the worlds people of retirement age will not receive any kind of pension.)La mitad de las empresas espaà ±olas realizarà ¡ on line el 20 por ciento de sus transacciones. (Half of Spanish businesses will carry out 20 percent of their transactions online.)Una docena de chicos se alimenta en el basural. (A dozen children are feeding themselves in the dump.)Una docena de entidades crean una plataforma para im pulsar el laicismo. (A dozen entities are creating a platform to promote expanded use of the laity.) There are some authorities who indicate that the choice of singular or plural verb depends on whether it refers more to the group or to the individual entities that make up the group. But as you can see from the examples above, in real speech no such distinction is made.

Ethical Responsibilities and Considerations in Social Work - Samples
Question: Discuss about the Ethical Responsibilities and Considerations in Social Work. Answer: The professional sphere of the social workers might seem to be very rewarding but at the same time, it is extremely challenging and difficult as there are several responsibilities to address and duties to carry out. The responsibilities are associated with professional norms, social obligations, and ethical considerations. Therefore, it is extremely important to asses those responsibilities in order to develop a proper understanding of what actually the role of a social worker is. The current paper will thoroughly assess the potential responsibilities in order to comprehend the critical aspects mentioned above with particular regards to a specific case. In the outlined case, it can be seen that the reported incident might disrupt the cognitive, social, and emotional development of the three children. Furthermore, it may also have a huge long-term impact on the psychological and emotional dimension of the 13 year old child. As a social worker, one part of the responsibility is showing abilities and creating systems for the individuals to depend on to better their lives and encounters. In this regard, a social worker needs to develop and implement skills related to social perceptiveness, critical thinking, coordination, and judgment and decision-making. Thus, it would be primarily important to verify the claim the of the 13 year old child by monitoring and supervising the other two children closely for the next few days. It will help in assessing what exactly the issue is and thus, the more potential solution can be developed. If the supervising individual finds out that the claim is real and those two children have really engaged in sexual relationships, it would be better to counsel them and provide thorough advice. It would be imperative to hold separate counseling sessions for both of those children and explain to them the hazards of being engaged in a sexual relationship at such young age and in such complex environments from cognitive and emotional dimensions. The children should also be explained how their actions might create a long term impact on the other child's psychology. The ethical considerations also do not permit an individual to interfere in a relationship which has been established by the consent of two engaged individuals. However, as per the tender age and potentially immaturity of the children are concerned, the role of a social worker is to provide them appropriate guidance wherever possible. Therefore, it will also be significant to discuss and address how the children assess their relationship. If it is consensual, even then it would be imperative to know if the relationship is just for physical pleasure or if there is indeed a real intimacy which has driven the relation. Thus, the counseling will be more appropriate. Through a comprehensive discussion and counseling, the issue can be settled as much as possible according to the ethical considerations and if the situation still remains problematic, then there would inevitably be a requirement for removing one of those children to another care home after giving him/her appropriate time to settle the psychological conditions. A successful correspondence, a non-judgmental strategy, establishment of trustworthiness, and keeping up solid connections are vital to empowering a significant change by social workers. The social workers have huge and a wide range of responsibilities surrounded by ethical considerations which require specific skills and attributes to be met properly. In this context, the issues can be most appropriately addressed by the proposed strategies and solutions in order to ensure the benefits and wellbeing of every engaged individual.

El Buscon is a picaresque novel. These are fiction novels, which use satire in representation of ideas. In this case, the author is usually humorous through exaggeration of ideas. In these novels, characters use their wit so that they can survive in the society, which is usually corrupt. This style of writing novels is widely used by writers in the modern literature. The style is very important because it makes literature works interesting.[1] Satire is a stylistic device in which the author uses irony or exaggerations in expressing ideas. Satire has played a major role in writing this novel. The paper shows how satire is used in the novel and how it helps in the development of the plot of the story. Discussion The novel El Buston revolves around the adventures of Don Pablos who is described as a buscon. This individual uses unfair means like cheating and stealing in order to obtain money or properties. Two things that Pablos wanted to achieve in life were that he wanted to grow as a person as well as learning good morals but he never achieved any. Even though the novel satirizes Spanish life, it acted as a literary exercise fo r Quevedo who represented the different characteristics of these people but with exaggerations, which produced a comic effect. The novel profound the notion that children from honorable parents should be honored and never those whose parents are not .The author of the novel satirizes the Spanish society. He also attacks the main character in the story Pablos, a character who always struggles to achieve a higher position.[2] Quevedo is against the idea of moving from one class to another because to him, it is a way of creating disorder in the society. Quivedo punished Pablos because of his attempts to be better placed. Pablos has believed that all human beings were equal. The book is very important because it portrays many aspects of the society. Through the novel, we learn more about a thief. The book is divided into three main parts. Several themes are clearly portrayed in the novel, for example, the theme of family as well as legal and lawless cruelty. As the story begins, Pablos is a child whereas his father Clemente Pablos is a thief and a barber. Aldonza, Pablosââ¬â¢ mother is portrayed as a witch and a prostitute.Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More We learn through Pablos that his mother was a new Christian convert. Pablos had a brother who had been flogged to death in prison, as he was a thief. The characters in the story are satirized. For example, being a barber, we do not expect Pablosââ¬â¢ father to be a thief. He has a right way of earning his living. The character of the mother is also satirized because as a new Christian convert, she should not engage in prostitution. Witchcraft is too not advocated for in the Christian life. Pablos was interested in studies and his parents allowed him to enroll in a school. Don Diego Coronel was Pablosââ¬â¢ best friend at school. He is faced with many challenges at school after which he decides t o stop schooling. He decides not to go back home again. Don Diego remains to be his best friend and he too leaves school. Don Alanso, the father of Diego decides to hand over the two boys as wards to Dominle Cabra in Segovia. Pablos and Diego suffer a lot in the hands of Cabra especially lack of enough food. The death of one boy due to starvation made Alanso to shift the boys from that school to Alcala to continue with their studies.[3] As Alanso, Diego and Pablos travelled to Alcala, they came across a group of students who mocked Pablos. After the three arrived at Alacala, Pablos was separated from Don Diego and beaten up by some University students because he was not a person enough. Pablos shared his room with four other students who also beat him up during the night. Not being a person is not enough for one to be beaten up. It is ironical because he does not defend himself. His reaction is funny because he kills pigs, which he does not own. He holds a party in which he tricks h is property owner into giving two chickens in exchange. This is satirical because the value of a pig can never be equivalent to that of a chicken. Among the bad habits included stealing sweets from a merchant in the locality as well as swords. His friends laugh at him, because of the things that he does. The author exaggerates his characters because a sweet is a minor thing to be stolen from a merchant. Pablos should have stolen things of greater value. During their stay in Alcala, Pablos got a letter, which informed him of the death of his father who had been hanged.[4] The letter also indicated that his mother was in jail. Don Diego also received a letter from his father who warned him against his friendship with the Pablos. The friendship between Pablos and Don Diego ends. Pablos arranges to meet with one of his relatives who would arrange for Pablos inheritance of his fathers wealth who was already dead. The way in which the above problems occur to Pablos is satirical. His fathe r is hanged, his mother is in jail and his best friend leaves him. It is not possible that all of these took place at the same time.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Role of Satire in El Buscon specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As he travelled to Segovia to claim his properties, he came across an insane engineer. They discussed many topics with the engineer. They went to an inn where he met with a teacher who tried to teach him a lesson. It is satirical that the characters that Pablos interacted with were mad. Does it mean that he did not come across mentally fit persons who he could share with what he had? On their arrival to Cercedilla, they played cards where Hermit tricked them and ended up as the winner of all the games that they played. On arrival to Segovia, he met with Alanso Ramplomn his uncle. People celebrate in his uncleââ¬â¢s house at a great dinner where they ate and drunk. Pablos is however n ot involved in the party. As people enjoy, he moves around the compound. He returns to the house and drives away all the people present in the party except his uncle who was supposed to discuss the issue of inheritance. It is funny that Pablos decided to drive his uncles visitors away and they did nothing wrong to him and his uncle does not seem to question him. The man who claims to be a person teaches Pablos of the expected behavior in court. He taught him lying techniques as well as some of the ways in which he could take advantage of other people in some situations.[5] The main aim of the alleged hidalgo was to pass knowledge to Pablos on the way in which he could use unfair means in obtaining other peoples properties or even take advantage of other people in particular situations. Pablos is displayed as a character whose character traits are not acceptable in the society. Being corrupt is a vice discouraged by all societies.[6] Pablos and the alleged person visited Don Toribio in his house. Don Torobio is another man who claims to be a man. In this house, Pablos met with deceitful and unreliable people like thieves and gangsters. Pablos is dressed in tattered clothes, which makes his appearance funny bearing in mind that he is one person who intends to be a gentleman. Pablos was arrested and taken to the prison together with the friends he met at Toribios house. At the jail, Pablos befriended a jailer through whom he is not flogged. When Pablos told the jailer that he is related to his wife, he accepted and helped him. Does it mean that he is not aware of his wifeââ¬â¢s relatives? ââ¬Å"Pablos changed his name to Ramilo de Guzman and went to an inn where he pretended to be a rich man with the aim of winning Berenguela de Rebolledo, a daughter of the innkeeper.â⬠[7] He succeeded in his lies and Berenguela allowed him to visit her during the night. She told him climb at the top of the roof so that he can enter her room without other peopleââ¬â¢s awareness. The roof collapsed as he tried to enter the room after which the innkeepers wake up, beat him up and finally throw him to jail again. It is very difficult to access a room through the roof.[8]Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? Let's see if we can help you! Again, he changes his name to Don Felipe Tristan. Villa is the residence of the two rich women. One of the women has three married nieces and she wants Pablos to marry one of them. Pablos falls in love with Dona Ana the most beautiful girl of the three. During Pablosââ¬â¢ picnic with Dona Ana, they came across Don Diego who recognizes Pablos at the first sight. Pablos does not however recognize him. Pablos stays behind until he changes to his new begging career.[9] In his begging career, Pablos met with Valcazar a beggar who introduced him to the world of begging. He used the money he obtained from begging to buy new clothes. In addition, he bought a hat and a sword. He then migrated to Toledo where people did not know him. In Toledo, he joined comedic actors where he worked as a scriptwriter. He was also a poet in Toledo. At this place, his new nam e was Alanso el Cruel. Unfortunately, the arrest of the group leader by the police led to the disintegration of the group. Pablos leaves the acting career and falls in love with a nun. Finally, Pablos travels to Seville and joins a group of gangsters. The gangsters went out, drunk and ate together so that they lost control over their behavior. Pablos and the other thieves were fortunate as they managed to escape. It is satirical that Pablos and the other gangsters managed to escape from the police bearing in mind that they were intoxicated and therefore they did not have control on themselves. After this, they travelled to Indies to see if there will be any positive change in their lives. We however learn through Pablos that life was even harder for him in America.[10] Conclusion Satire is a very useful stylistic device. The use of satire makes works interesting such that individual feel like they should continue reading. As people read satirize works, they laugh and all their atten tion is drawn into what they are reading. For example, the reader of this novel will be interested to know the reason behind Pablosââ¬â¢ change of names. In many cases, people who change their names so that they cannot be recognized usually have bad motives. The stages through which Pablos passes are satirized. He moves from being a beggar, scriptwriter and a poet, falls in love with a nun and finally joins a group of gangsters. In each stage, he changed his names. The novel is full of characters that are not morally upright. We have weared characters in the novel like witches and thieves who are not acceptable in many societies. Mminorities and Mental Ilnness essays
Mminorities and Mental Ilnness essays The cultures of racial and ethnic minorities influence many aspects of mental illness in the United States, including how patients from a given culture communicate and manifest their symptoms, their style of coping, their family and community support, and their willingness to seek treatment. Cultural and social influences are not the only determinants of mental illness and patterns of service use, but they do play important roles. The condition of mental illness is affecting minorities in greater numbers than whites in the United States. Accessibility to care for minorities with mental illness is very difficult. Minorities are more skeptical to seek the proper care for this disease. Shame, stigmatism, discrimination, and mistrust also keep minorities from seeking treatment when it is needed, along with not having medical insurance. Racism and discrimination is another factor along with the mistrust of the health care system and the bias attitude of the physicians. The U.S g overnment and private health care providers are currently trying to create a more systematic approach for States and local communities to extend health and mental health care to their uninsured residents. In the United States cultural and social factors contribute to the causation of mental illness, yet that contribution varies by disorder. Mental illness is considered the product of a complex interaction among biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors. The role of any of these major factors can be stronger or weaker depending on the specific disorder. Ethnic and racial minorities in the United States face a social and economic environment of inequality that includes greater exposure to racism, discrimination, violence, and poverty. Living in poverty has the most measurable effect on mental illness. Majority of minorities within the lower income bracket, with less education, and basically blue collar occupations are about t...

Characterizing Mrs. Bennet
As far as the Mrs. being a gossip, it is clear that Mr. Bennet has heard his fair share of it from her. When asked if he wants to know who is moving into Netherfield he replies that he knows that she wants to tell him, but that he does not particularly ââ¬Å"wantâ⬠to hear it. We also see that Mr. Bennet knows his wife is somewhat of a drama queen and he is constantly poking fun at her with his sarcasm, which she never seems to understand as such. Yet another example of Mr. Bennetââ¬â¢s experience with his wifeââ¬â¢s personality is his seemingly un-caring behavior towards his daughters getting married. Mrs. Bennet is convinced that Mr. Bingley could be her new son-in-law, Mr. Bennet points out that Bingley is not necessarily there to find a wife. Through all these ways we can see a bit of Mrs. Bennetââ¬â¢s personality through the words of another character in the book. We can get even more information through words not necessarily spoken in the book, but spoken to us through the voice of the narrator. Even the simplest of comments can show a huge personality trait. The simplest way the narrator shows us that Mrs. Bennet loves to gossip and talk is when Mr. Bennet says he has no objection to hearing her story, the narrator points out that ââ¬Å"That was invitation enough,â⬠showing us that Mrs. Bennet is very eager to get her information out. Although we can gather much of Mrs. Bennetââ¬â¢s character through the entirety of the page, the narrator makes sure we have gathered what we need to about her by giving us a summary at the very end of the page. The narrator tells us that ââ¬Å"She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news. â⬠So, once again we gather that she loves ââ¬Å"visiting and news,â⬠or gossip, and that the business of her life is to get her daughters married. Mrs. Bennet is not hard to figure out with Jane Austenââ¬â¢s excellent characterization techniques. With her great narration techniques we have the author there to tell us much of what we need to know. Even better is that much of the time we donââ¬â¢t even need the narrators help, through the speech in the book; whether it be Mrs. Bennet herself, or somebody speaking to her or about her. Through either the character itself, the characters around it, or the author herself, Jane Austen manages to use all three ââ¬Å"charactersâ⬠excellently to show us the personality of Mrs. Bennet, as well as the rest of her characters. Book vs. Film(life of pi) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Book vs. Film(life of pi) - Essay Example The second part describes the circumstances that led to the sea voyage that forms the core of the story, and the third section is a detailed description of Piââ¬â¢s experiences at sea. The fourth and final section of the novel includes the authorââ¬â¢s sentiments and tells of Piââ¬â¢s rescue and explains the how the story developed. Piââ¬â¢s adventure starts when the ship they were sailing on gets shipwrecked and he is stranded on a life boat in the company of a Bengal Tiger named Richard parker. In the film, Pi is accompanied by Richard Parker, an Orangutan monkey, a Zebra and Hyena. This paper seeks to discuss Life of Pi by focusing on several points and the spirit of survival, its impact and significance in life. Pi was brought up as a Hindu by his family a characteristic that can be attributed to him being a vegetarian. As Pi grew older, he discovered the existence of Christianity and Islam religions, which he investigated and explored extensively. He came to the conc lusion that the three religions had their benefits thus; he decided to practice all of them since all he wanted was to love God (Martel, 2012). This is illustrated by his conclusion regarding the two visitors to their zoo who belonged to two different religious affiliations, yet they had identical names. Pi concluded that even though they belonged to two extremely different religious inclinations, they still sought to gain a higher understanding and love a higher supreme deity. Piââ¬â¢s experience with the three religions can be construed to have prepared him to deal with what he faced at sea (Martel, 2012). The aspects above are better illustrated in the book than in the film adaptation because the book offers the reader the opportunity to use their imagination, understanding, perspective and insight to recreate the authorââ¬â¢s intended premise. Pi faced a life threatening situation at sea and his faith in religion can be attributed to his triumph over adversity especially i n matters of faith when he was faced with doubt. The animals that were in Piââ¬â¢s company on the life boat served to enlighten Pi on the need of being string when faced with adversity. The Hyena threatened Piââ¬â¢s life by snarling at him an indication that it meant him harm. The hyena killed the grants zebra and the orangutan monkey then ate them after which Richard Parker the tiger killed and ate the hyena leaving it and pi as the sole occupants of the vessel. This served as a very significant lesson for pi because it helped Pi realize that in order for him to survive; he had to gain control of the tiger. This incident also taught Pi that the world was only meant for the strong and those who were ready to live by any means necessary (Martel, 2012). It helped Pi realize that the world had no room for the weak as illustrated by the way the hyena eliminated the other animals who could not fight or fend defend themselves on the life boat. Pi comes to the conclusion that in orde r to secure his survival he has to establish a hierarchy on the life boat so as to facilitate a peaceful coexistence between him and the tiger. Piââ¬â¢s use of animal psychology and training techniques he learnt from their zoo is an illustration of how adversity has the ability of exposing an individualââ¬â¢s hidden potential and abilities. The film adaptation of the novel is more illustrative of the above aspects because the situation on the life boat is brought to life for the audience. The theme of life is

Frankenstein Vs. Bladerunner Essay -- Mary Shelley James Riddley-Scott
As society changes around us, we spot things we never noticed before: high divorce rates, murder rates, and drug use just to name a few. James Riddley-Scott and Mary Shelley noticed and had a fear of child abandonment. In Frankenstein, Shelley explores this subject through the viewpoint of a man, Victor, who creates a child so hideous that he cannot bear to look at it, and consequently deserts it. In Blade Runner, Scott explores this matter through a businessman, Tyrell, who makes replicants of humans, the Nexus 6, gives them only four years to live, and sells them as slaves. The children of these creators turn out to be smarter and more human than expected, and revolt against the way society treats them, giving us all a lesson in parenting and child development. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã In Shelley?fs Frankenstein, Victor brings a monster to life only to abandon it out of fear and horror. ?gThe beauty of the dream had vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart?h (Shelley, 35). The reader must question the ethics of Victor. After all, he did bring this creature upon himself. This renunciation later comes to haunt Victor, and hurts his creation more than Victor can ever imagine. When Victor leaves the monster, Shelley is exploring abandonment by the parent. Later in the novel, when the monster tries to confront Victor and Victor shows that he does not want any part of the Monster by saying ?gBegone, vile insect! Or rather, stay, that I may trample you to dust!?h(74). Shelley is showing us that the monster is not being nurtured, as a child should. Blade Runner also looks at the roles of parenting and abandonment. When first meeting Tyrell, Roy states, ?gIt's not an easy thing to meet your maker?h, Scott reveals that the Nexus 6 have been discarded by their family, and have had a lack of a loving relationship throughout their lives. The idea that parents play a double role as parent and creator continues throughout the stories. Tyrell is looked at as a parent and a way for a longer life. Sebastian and Roy meet Tyrell by riding in an elevator as though acceding to heaven where Tyrell lives. When they enter the businessman?fs bedroom, Tyrell demandingly asks Sebastian, ?gmilk and cookies been keeping you awakeh just as a father would talk to his son. In Frankenstein, Victor is viewed as a father or God figure that can create another life, an Eve for his Ad... ...e your child no matter how he or she may look like or act. Victor and Tyrell saw their creations as less than human, and therefore treated them as such. If we see our children as less than human, and we neglect them, they may grow to believe that they are monsters. Shelley and Scott believed this, and set out to prove a point. One day our children will grow up, and they will no longer have a clean slate. A grown-up child will reflect all that we have taught them, good or evil. Scott and Shelley wanted to convey to all parents that, to their children at least, they are more than just disciplinarians. They can be the ones to teach about love, and they can bring more meaning into the lives they have created. List of Works Cited Blade Runner. Dir. James Riddley-Scott. Perf. Junk Food Industry and Obesity
ââ¬Å"In the U. S. obesity rates have risen from 14% in 1978 to 31% in 2000â⬠¦according to WHO/FAO in 2001, chronic diseases resulting largely from poor diet contributed to 60% of the 56 million reported deaths worldwideâ⬠(Lang & Heasman 2004:53). Both Canadian and American citizens alike spend vast amounts of their money on food and a significant percentage of that money is spent on low-nutrition foods such as fast foods and processed foods. Being the cash cow that it is, the capitalist food system has provided the opportunity for corporations to profit numerous types of junk foods (fast & processed foods containing high sugar, salt, fat). According to Robert Albrittonââ¬â¢s (2009:90) ââ¬Å"Let Them Eat Junk,â⬠he argues that ââ¬Å"the consumption of junk foods is not the only cause of obesity, but it is doubtless a major causeâ⬠¦[and] obesity is something that we allow to happen, and while there may be many causes, [he] would argue that the primary cause is a capitalist food system that we have allowed to subject us. â⬠This essay will further extend on that argument and examine that the growing trend of obesity is caused by the fundamental principle of the capitalist food system, which is to profit from selling junk foods without considering the health consequences associated with it. Examining why consumers eat junk food in a sociological perspective, the financial incentives associated with selling junk foods in a capitalist perspective, and the health problems/consequences from the consumption of junk foods will be explored. A solution will be provided in attempts to rectify the growing trend of obesity due to junk foods. It is vital that we also look into the health implications as a result of the consumption of junk foods. Most notably, the greatest risk being obesity. Public health is an important factor in todayââ¬â¢s society. Billions of dollars are spent on health care all over the world. At the same time, about the same amount of money is being put into a system that deters the health of millions of citizens every year (Adams 2005). In the present, the junk food industry is becoming a focal point in controversy surrounding its impact on public health. For example, ââ¬Å"many blame fast food businesses for public health concerns, arguing that fast-food choices and large portion sizes contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a variety of other diet-related problemsâ⬠(Adams 2005). In 2002, director Morgan Spurlock subjected himself to a diet based only in McDonald's fast food three times a day for thirty days and without working out. His objective was to prove why most of the Americans are so fat, with many cases of obesity (IMDB). He gained about 18 pounds over the course of the experiment, experienced mood swings, loss of sex drive, and nearly catastrophic liver damage. Spurlockââ¬â¢s body fat composition increased by 7 percent, his cholesterol went up 60 points, and his blood pressure rose from 120/80 to 150/100. Shortly after Mr. Spurlockââ¬â¢s revelations about his fast-food experiment, the Associated Press reported that McDonaldââ¬â¢s was phasing out its super size menu options (Hagloch 2005). ââ¬Å"Super Size Meâ⬠(name of the documentary) was a great example of how junk food affects the general public and is also an indication that the junk food industry, motivated by profits and shareholder interests, has ignored its responsibilities to the consuming public. It is clear that there is a huge demand for junk foods and that corporations thrive on this demand by creating more and more junk foods. As a result, there are health consequences such as obesity. Solutions to reduce obesity should be one of the main concerns in todayââ¬â¢s society, however, to completely rid junk foods entirely need not be one of the solutions. The junk food industry plays a significant role in stimulating the North American economies. ââ¬Å"Three-quarters of all Americans live within three miles of a McDonaldââ¬â¢s, and two-thirds live within three miles of a KFC, Pizza Hut or Taco Bell fast food restaurant. â⬠(Albritton 2009:98). In addition, supermarkets in North America are one of the most popular destinations for consumers to do most of their shopping. Supermarkets play a major role in the American food regime since that is where 40% of all food is purchased. Supermarkets typically sell a high proportion of highly processed, highly packaged and highly transported foods. In other words, supermarkets are largely purveyors of unsustainable petrofoods and unhealthy processed foodsâ⬠(Albritton 2009:120). Given that junk foods are a signific ant contributor to the North American economies, it would be unwise to completely abolish the production and sales of junk food in order to solve the obesity epidemic. Rather, there should be more of an educational solution to fight against obesity. With the high demand for junk foods due to the fast-paced lifestyle in North America and for the availability of these foods provided by corporations that strive to gain profits, it is no surprise that junk food is one of the leading causes of obesity in North America today. As Robert Albritton (2009:90) pointed out, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the primary cause is a capitalist food system that we have allowed to subject us. Although the junk food industry is significantly vital towards the stability of the North American economies, it would be unwise to rid the production and sales of junk foods entirely. Instead, the use of subsidy dollars to invest into nutritional awareness programs and the reduction in portion sizes for fast and processed foods are recommended options to prevent obesity. These steps may not on its own prevent obesity, however, these are one of many important steps in fighting against the obesity epidemic today and for future generations.

Hip Hop Nationalism Essay examples - 944 Words
Jason Chanthorn Christopher y West African American History from 1865 Journal Article- The State of Rap: Time and Place Hip hop is a form of art that has been popular for the past twenty years. Although people in recent years often mistake rap music as vulgar and ill-mannered, the hip hop community continues to provide a great way to channel emotion and soul into their music. In his article, ââ¬Å"The State of Rap: Time and Placeâ⬠Jeffrey Louis Decker illustrates the black nationalism within the hip hop community by exploring how Black Nationalism can be accounted for within the hip hop music. The multiple times the black community was socially mistreated, hip hop artists continued to voice their opinions. I believe hip hop is great to voice an opinion and promote self worth. Ordeals such as the Rodney King case sparked a huge outrage within the black community. Decker mentions in the article that during the Rodney King trial, the white officers from LAPD have been acquitted by an all-white jury charged for the brutality of Rodney King (Decker 2008, 55).
